HVAC Component Warranty Mistakes to Avoid
When it comes to several important parts of your HVAC system, including some of your largest and most expensive pieces like furnaces and air conditioning units, warranties are an important area to keep track of. There are a few types of warranties out there, from manufacturer warranties to extended company warranties and many others, and knowing which protections you have on important components like these is vital.
At My Buddy the Plumber, we can help you understand warranty information well in advance for all of our air conditioning and furnace installations. The steps for ensuring you remain under your warranty are generally very simple, but they’re also worth knowing clearly to make sure you never risk voiding the warranty. Here are some mistakes to avoid that could make voiding a possibility.
Did You Register?
One thing that some folks don’t know about warranties: Some of them require registration, whether via post or email. Not registering can, in some cases, void the warranty immediately – and in others, it will create issues you don’t want to deal with. Anytime you have a new piece of equipment installed, whether it’s for HVAC or other areas that involve warranties, be specific about finding out whether this warranty requires registration and, if so, who is responsible for performing this registration.
Maintenance Concerns
Annual maintenance is important for all HVAC components, particularly those large enough to be covered by a warranty, and this is for more than one reason. Not only will it help keep your system in great shape and raise its lifespan while saving you money, it’s also an outright requirement of many warranty programs.
That’s right – many warranties will be voided if you do not perform annual professional maintenance on them. This will be stated directly in the warranty language, which again, you should always be reading carefully.
Improper Parts
Manufacturers that offer warranties generally do so under the umbrella of their own parts only. It would be unrealistic to expect them to warranty parts or products that are not theirs, so even minor parts used on repairs that are from other companies could void your warranty.
Self Repairs
Many warranties will contain express clauses stating that if you or any other non-certified HVAC professional attempts repairs on the component, the warranty is void. This is for your safety as much as it is for the quality of the parts – those without specific training for these parts simply should not be working on them.
Poor Documentation
Finally, any work that’s done on warrantied components of your HVAC system should be properly documented. Keep receipts and other paperwork for any installations, repairs or inspections. It’s possible your warranty will not be honored if you cannot provide this documentation.
